The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is an initiative by the NCERT that attempts
to identify talented students and assist in nurturing their
capabilities. Exceptionally abled students in the field of science,
commerce, law, and social studies chosen through NTSE are provided
financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship to enable
them to pursue a degree of their choice.
Every year, 1000
students are selected to receive a fixed amount of scholarship from
the government of India. Here’s the monthly amount for every
class/course:
- Class XI-XII: Rs.1250
- Undergraduates/Postgraduates: Rs.2000
- Ph.D: To be fixed according to UGC guidelines.
Pattern of exam
The NTSE is a written
exam which is considered one of the most difficult and prestigious
tests held in the nation. There are two stages – stage I and stage
II – that have to be cleared to be a recipient of the scholarship.
Stage I is held by the state/UT under which the candidate’s school
falls. Those who clear stage I have to give another exam, which is
stage II conducted by the NCERT.
Who can apply?
Class X students of a
registered school can apply for stage I of NTSE. It is open to all
students of Indian nationality irrespective of domicile. Indian
students living abroad can directly apply for stage II.
The last date of
submission of application for stage I is usually around August of
every year and the exam is held around November. The second stage
exam will be held around May the year after that.

You can download the
application form from the NCERT website. There is a nominal fee for
stage I exam that will be prescribed by the respective states/UTs ;
