AIPMT is a tough nut to crack – there are too many people competing for too few seats. There is an ocean of study to do. You’ll find much advise on what you should do. For a change, let’s see what you shouldn’t.
- Have too much faith on your coaching centre: They are designed to give a single pattern of education to everyone. We are not saying that is bad, but if your sole hope for studying is what they teach, you need to re-think. You have to have your own strategy because everyone is different. Make a plan of what you need most – and do it at the beginning of your preparation. Utilize the time at the centre to strengthen your concepts, and the time at home to find more weak points and practice.
- Undermine the havoc that Internet can create: While it is true that Internet is a great source of information, everyone will agree that it is the biggest distraction too. The ideal thing to do would be to de-connect yourself from all social networking sites and block entertainment sites. If you have to connect over for study chats, make a new account that involves only your study buddies.
- Pull all-nighters every day: Your exam won’t be held at night, so if you are sleeping through the day and studying through nights, you will more likely sleep on the exam table too. Our brains get trained to what they are used to doing, it is called habit. If you are practicing only at night, then your mind will slowly become accustomed to that routine. So, it’s okay to study through the night occasionally, but not perpetually.
- Forget to relax: It’s very important to give yourself a breather. Proper rest, exercise, and nutritious food are not just some mumbo-jumbo that elders repeat. It’s all about keep your brain functioning at optimum levels. So, deep breathing and six hours of sleep are mandatory.
- Not look at the big picture: A lot of motivation is lost when you are held up in the everyday routine running to and from classes, studying, and thinking what you are going to do tomorrow. Don’t let that set you back. You are studying to become a doctor. And there are few jobs in the world more meaningful than one that saves lives everyday. When you feel low, just think how your hard-work will make a difference to so many lives, and you will have a new energy to get back to work.
It all boils down to planning, execution, and motivation. Just keep going and improving and you’ll see results.
